What is Solar hot water Heating (SHWH)?

A solar hot water system collects solar radiation which is then used to heat the household water, it can provide hot water for baths , showers and other domestic needs. It will not provide hot water for your central heating system this would require a very large collectors array which would not be affordable

The SHWS consists of a panel usually mounted on the roof , Water is pumped through the solar panel and heated by solar energy, the heated water then is fed through a heat exchanger, warming the water in your hot water cylinder.

Installation
Solar panels need to be professionally installed to qualify for a government grant. DIY installation is also  possible with some types of systems , you will need to have knowledge of the electrical installations and plumbing, and you will have to also make sure you can work safely on your roof.
Planning permission
Is not needed for all homes.. You will need to check  with your local authority planning office, this is usually be carried out by the installer as part of the fitting service , planning permission maybe required  if you live in a Listed building or Conservation Area. 
Maintenance
There is very little can go wrong with a SHWS , with the lifespan of over 20 years is a lot longer than conventional heating systems .
Simple maintenance periodic checks carried out to ensure there is no panel damage and connections do not require attention.

Is my house suitable for SHWH?
For maximum efficiency, solar panels should be mounted ideally on a south-facing roof at between 30-60 degree angle to the horizontal the panels should be out of shadows of  trees and buildings , the installer should check your house for suitability of the system. There should be sufficient area on your roof to accommodate between 2.75 - 4 .0 meters of solar collector panel.
How long will it take to payback the cost of the system?
Solar power is clean energy, payback for solar hot water heating systems is around 10 Years 
To be eligible for a grant you'll need to buy a system approved by the government and use an accredited installer. The low carbon buildings project offers grants of £400 on solar water heating systems, which cost £2000-£3000.
Financial savings will depend on the amount of hot water used , the boiler efficiency and the type of fuel usually used to heat the water .
