What is a solar cell ? 
Basically a solar or photovoltaic cell is a device made from semi-conducting materials such as silicon that converts light energy into electrical energy by the Photovoltaic effect.
Photovoltaic or PV (photo = light, volt = unit of electrical current) cells work simply by photons in the sunlight being absorbed within the semiconductor material such as silicon in the cells , negatively charged electrons are then knocked loose from their atoms allowing them to flow to produce electricity.
Types of solar Modules 
 
Monocrystalline modules
These are high quality and are suitable for most applications.
These Cells are manufactured from wafers cut from an ingot of a single silicon crystal.
Field efficiencies of between 10 - 15%
Guarantee: 80% of rated for 20/25 years.
 
Polycrystalline modules
These are high quality and are suitable for most applications.
These Cells are manufactured from wafers cut from an ingot of a single silicon crystal.
Field efficiencies of between 9 - 13%
Guarantee: 80% of rated for 20/25 years.
 
Amorphous modules
These work well in conditions of diffused radiation with the cells being sensitive to a wider light spectrum.
These Cells are manufactured from silicon deposited in several layers .
Field efficiencies of between 8 - 10%
Guarantee: 80% of rated for 10/20 years.
Panel Rating 
All Photovoltaic modules are rated in Watts (Wp)
The peak wattage of a solar module is the number of watts (how much power) the panel will produce under
Standard Test Conditions. (STC)  STC are 1kWh/m2 of solar radiation at a temperature of 25º C in an Air Mass 1.5
Ideal conditions do not exist outside the lab so you should expect about 10% less for most panels.
