The garden lamp consists of the following main components -
1.Housing for the components.
2.Solar panel.
3.AA/AAA batteries.
4.Controller board.
5.LED. (light emitting diode)
6.Photo-resistor to detect darkness.
On the top of the lamp there is a solar panel, this absorbs the solar energy from the sun and converts it into electrical energy through the control board which is stored in the internal battery/ies.
When the integrated photo-resistor detects low light levels the controller switches on the LED light/s automatically to provide light on an evening.

Lighting a few years old and no longer working ?
Modern solar lights are fitted with either 'AA'/AAA rechargable batteries the most probable cause of this problem is that these batteries have expired and now need replacing.
Take a look in the body housing of the light , if there is a battery compartment remove the existing batteries and replace with new ones, test the light with the new batteries by placing your hand over the light sensor to ensure the light operates.
