Glossary of Terms
Alternating current (AC) is an electrical current whose magnitude and direction vary cyclically, as opposed to Direct current, whose direction remains constant. The usual waveform of an AC power circuit is a sine wave, as this results in the most efficient transmission of energy.
 
Ampere, shortened to amp, (symbol: A) is a unit of electric current, or amount of electric charge per second.
 
Ampere-hour shortened to amp hour  (abbreviated as Ah or A-h) is a unit of electric charge. One ampere-hour is equal to 3600 coulombs (ampere-seconds), and is the amount of electric charge transferred by a steady current of one ampere for one hour.
 
Electrical Current is the amount of electric current (measured in amperes) through some surface, e.g., a section through a copper conductor.
 
Electrolyte is a substance containing free ions that behaves as an electrically conductive medium.
 
Float charging also known as Trickle charging means charging a battery at the same rate as it is self-discharging, thus maintaining a full capacity battery.
 
Hertz (symbol: Hz) is the SI unit of frequency. One hertz simply means one per second.
 
Photovoltaics, or PV for short, is a solar power technology that uses solar cells or solar photovoltaic arrays to convert light from the sun into electricity.
 
Volt (symbol: V) is the SI derived unit of electric potential difference or electromotive force. The volt is defined as the potential difference across a conductor when a current of one ampere dissipates one watt of power.
 
Watt (symbol: W) is the SI derived unit of power, equal to one joule per second.
One watt is one joule (the SI unit of energy) per second, that’s 1 newton metre per second.
 
kilowatt (symbol: kW) is a unit for measuring power, equal to one thousand watts.
 
megawatt (symbol: MW) is equal to one million (106) watts.
 
watt-hour (symbol W·h or Wh) is a unit of energy. It is most commonly used on household electricity meters in the form of the kilowatt-hour (kW·h or kWh), which is 1,000 watt-hours.
