Draughts: To stop draughts and wasted heat, use a brush or PVC seal on your exterior doors.
Windows: Make sure your windows are draught proofed.
Curtains: Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
Lights: Always turn them off when you leave a room and adjust blinds or curtains to let as much passive light into your home during the day. Swapping your conventional light bulb to an energy efficient bulb could save up to £9 on your annual electricity bill or £100 over the bulb's lifetime!
Heating : Turning your thermostat down by 1 degree could cut your heating bills by up to 10%.(£40 per year)
If you are going to be out of the home for a long period during the winter, leave the thermostat on a low setting to provide protection from pipes freezing..
Hot Water: Hot water should not be too hot so that you have to mix it with cold it does not need to be scalding. It is recommended that your hot water is heated to 60 degrees once a day to eliminate the possibility of Legionella
Boiling Hot Water: Only boil as much water as you need .If everyone did this we'd save enough electricity to power two thirds of the street lighting in the UK.
Hot Water Usage: Use the plug in your basin or sink. Allowing hot water to drain away is a waste.
Electrical appliances: To cut down on wasted energy, avoid leaving appliances on and remember not to leave them on charge unnecessarily. Don't leave your appliances on stand by - Almost a billion pounds of electricity is wasted in the UK every year by people leaving appliances on standby!
Fridges: Don't leave the door open for longer than necessary as cold air escapes.
Defrost your freezer regularly to keep it running efficiently and cheaply. If your fridge frosts up quickly - get the seals checked out, also if your fridge is next to a cooker try and make a gap between the two appliances.
Washing machines : Try and wash a full load, or use a half load or economy programme.
Modern washing machine powders work effectively at low temperatures , try using a low temperature setting.
Washing at 30 Degree C. rather than normal temperatures means you use 40% less electricity.
Spin dry clothes before putting them in to the tumble dryer will save you money, better still if it's a nice day put your washing outside to dry .
Dishwashers: Use the low temperature programmes and try and wash a full load.
